How Manuka Honey Can Treat Herpes and Cold Sores
Now that we've covered some of the general health benefits of manuka honey, let's talk about how it can help with herpes and cold sores. First of all, manuka honey has antiviral properties that can help fight off the herpes simplex virus. This is what makes it an effective natural remedy for cold sores. Applying manuka honey to a cold sore can help speed up the healing process and reduce the duration and severity of the outbreak.
Manuka honey can also be effective in treating genital herpes. Studies have shown that applying manuka honey to genital herpes lesions can help reduce pain and discomfort and speed up healing.
Recipe Time
Overnight Sore Treatment:
• using a mortar and pestle or a small plate and the back of a spoon, crush 1 Zink tablet into powder.
• In a small glass jar with an airtight lid add 1 TBSP of Manuka Honey.
- Mix the Zink powder with the Manuka honey and stir into a paste. Then apply a dab of this paste to the cold sore or herpes lesion. You can keep it on for a few hours or overnight. (You may place a band-aid over the treated sore to keep the honey from spreading into your bedding.) By morning the sore or lesion should be less visible (almost gone) and less painful. Place the air-tight lid on the remaining paste and store it in a cool place. Repeat the following day/night if needed.
Recognizing Real Manuka Honey
But wait – not all manuka honey is created equal! To get the full benefits of manuka honey, it's important to make sure you're getting the real kind. Here are some things to look for when buying manuka honey:
- UMF Rating: Look for a UMF (Unique Manuka Factor) rating on the label. This is a grading system that measures the antibacterial properties of the honey. The higher the UMF rating, the more potent the honey.
- Origin: Make sure the honey is from New Zealand and specifically states that it is manuka, honey.
