The Vitamins and Hormones You Lack

The vitamin you are lacking is actually a hormone!

This hormone is Vitamin D and is crucial for your overall health and well-being. In this post, we will explore why vitamin D is so important, its numerous benefits, and how it works as a key hormone.

What is vitamin D?

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble nutrient that plays a vital role in maintaining healthy bones and teeth. It is also involved in countless other vital functions in the human body, including immune health, hormone regulation, and muscle function. Unlike most vitamins, your body can make vitamin D on its own, with the help of sunlight exposure.

How vitamin D works as a hormone.

Vitamin D is created when our skin is exposed to sunlight. Once the vitamin D is made, it goes through several metabolic processes before it is usable by our bodies. Vitamin D is then converted into a hormone known as calcitriol, which binds to specific receptors, it then signals the genes to produce proteins that regulate various physiological functions.

Some of the benefits of vitamin D include:

1. Bone Health: Vitamin D is essential for calcium absorption and bone growth. It helps maintain healthy bones and teeth and can help prevent conditions like osteoporosis.

2. Immune Function: Vitamin D helps our bodies fight off infection and can help prevent chronic diseases.

3. Cancer Prevention: studies have shown that vitamin D can help reduce the risk of several different types of cancer, including breast, colorectal, and prostate cancer.

4. Hormone Regulation: Vitamin D is a hormone that helps regulate several physiological roles. This includes the production of insulin and the regulation of blood sugar levels.

5. Muscle Function: Vitamin D is important for maintaining healthy muscle function. It can help reduce muscle pain and weakness and can also improve balance and coordination.

1 billion people worldwide are known to be vitamin D  deficient. 35% are to be in America alone. Deficiencies are common in the winter months and for those who live in areas with less sun exposure. Some are vitamin D deficient because they are deficient in other minerals like calcium and magnesium. *Rember calcium is needed to absorb vitamin D but make sure to take your magnesium at a different time of day or else magnesium and calcium will cancel each other out.

To make sure you're getting enough vitamin D you can make dietary changes to include fatty fish, egg yolks, and fortified products like milk or orange juice. However, in many cases, supplements and sun exposure are needed to meet optimal levels.

In conclusion, vitamin D is a critically important hormone that plays a key role in numerous physiological functions. With its many benefits, it is worth taking the time to ensure that you are getting enough of this essential nutrient. Whether you're increasing your intake through diet, supplements, or simply spending more time in the sun, it is essential to prioritize your vitamin D levels.

In honor of the first day of Spring  on March 20th My recipe for you this week is to go out in the sun. All you need is 15 minutes a day to get the daily dose of vitamin D you need on your way to optimal health and wellness.
